While walking through the garden yesterday afternoon, I noticed some large carrots. Could it be time to harvest them?

Nah - one really should wait for cooler weather, but I did pull the really big ones. Don't want 'em to get too tough and woody. Most will be small - I never got around to thinning them this year.

The last of the onions are in now. Good year for onions and garlic.

That is one HUGE carrot. NY carrots always seem short and stubby. We didn't thin ours, either. We have a varigated variety this year. We are waiting longer so they have more of a chance to get bigger.

I usually harvest the carrots much later - most are still in the ground. The longer they stay (cold weather), the sweeter they are (or so "they" say).

Also - variety has a lot to do with growth. Some are genetically bound to be short and stubby. Others are long and lean. If I had worked the soil deeper, and if I had thinned the patches, I'd probably have more long lean carrots and fewer short and stubby ones, though.

Grace - I'm so glad your garden worked out this year! And that I could be of help. Good luck in 2011.
